Belt Ranks - Bottom to Top
- White : Lack of color; signifying no knowledge of Tae Kwon Do
- Yellow : The color of the rising sun, which encourages growth.
- Orange : The sun, deepening in color, rising in the sky, giving its energy to all living things.
- Green : The color of growing things driving upward.
- Purple : The color of the sky toward which growing things are reaching.
- Blue : The color of the sky toward which growing things are reaching.
- Red : The color of blood – the essential source of life.
- Black : The Black Belt is the highest color belt in TaeKwonDo. Black symbolizesthe combination of all colors of the universe, which we see as black. From black all colors originate and spring up to create the lively rainbow. The Black Belt is the beginning of true achievement, understanding and wisdom, blending the mind and the body into one, into a unity within oneself and the universe.
A novice of Tae Kwon Do begins with a white belt and advances through progressively darker colored belts until achieving the level of black belt. After attaining a first degree black belt, the student then studies to progress to second degree, then third degree through ninth degree black.
Tae Kwon Do seeks to attune itself with nature, thus the philosophy of the art is based on the cycle of life is that living things are born, grow to maturity, then move on to the next phase of existence. Each belt color symbolizes one of the stages in this process.
